God's Word on Death

As you travel life's journey, you can take the road from death to eternal life.

Death is not the most exciting topic.  Death respects no one.  Death is impersonal, cold, and so ... final.  We can talk about the death of a dream, the death of hope, the death of relationships, the death of a marriage, and ultimately physical death. All of these forms of death can be very painful.

Another form of death is spiritual death.  This is the death that matters most of all because it determines your eternity.  Many cultures around the world have stories of explorers and adventurers seeking the fountain of youth in effort to cheat death and to live forever.  The fact is that since we are all made in the image of God, our souls will live forever in eternity.  The determining factor as to where we will spend eternity depends on what we do while we have life and breathe here on earth.

It is not uncommon to hear of people who fear death.  A well-known TV personality in the United States is open about the fact that what he fears the most is death; physical death.  He does not know what will happen to him after he dies or what he should do to get into heaven.  The unknown of his future and of who he will face ultimately leads him to be filled with fear when discussing death.

Others believe that after life there is nothing but darkness.  After living a vibrant, multi- dimensional life in a world filled with brilliant colors, and teeming with fascinating sights and sounds and personalities, some believe that all there is after life is .... nothing.  But, there has to be more!  How can a world overflowing with adventure, passion, and life be followed by an eternity of .... Nothing?  Who wrote that script?

I believe that when we die, we will each stand before the Creator of the Heavens and the Universe and give an account of our lives.  It seems like it would be a good idea if we could earn our way into heaven.  We could stand before God and recount episode after episode of all the good works we did and of all the people whose lives benefited from our involvement.  That would be great!  Or would it?  What will we do with all the times that we acted selfishly, when we hurt others, when we were disobedient or disrespectful?  OK, well, let's say that God will consider what is in the "good" column of life and weigh it against what is in the "bad" column.  It would be fair to judge us on which column has the most material.  But, do you really think that God who is perfect and without sin will let you into His heaven because He is fair?

If you do not know what will happen to you after eternity or how you can get into heaven then you really do have reason ... good reason ... to fear death.  But, there is an answer and that is found in the Bible.

The Bible says that there is one way to heaven and that is by believing in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Believing is more than just acknowledging that Jesus is the Son of God but it means that you give Him control of your heart, mind, soul, and strength.  See, Jesus Christ came to earth over two thousand years ago to show us how to gain access to God, the Father.

As I mentioned, God is perfect and in Him there is no sin.  The penalty for those who have sinned is death which is eternal separation from God.  Since all of humanity has sinned and fallen short of God's perfection, how can we establish a relationship with Him?  Who will pay the penalty for our sin?  Well, God loves you and me so much that He gave His Son, His one and only Son, to pay that penalty for us by dying on the cross.

But the story does not end there because death could not hold Jesus in the grave.  Jesus is perfect love and He rose again three days after being crucified.  Death could not hold Him!  The Bible says, "O death, where is your victory?  O death, where is your sting?"

Jesus then returned to his rightful place, at the right hand of God the Father in heaven.

The Bible says that if you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior then you will be with Him in heaven for eternity!  While physical death is inevitable for each of us, we do not have to fear death for we can live with God forever.

Detrich Bonhoeffer was a German theologian who died in World War II.  When he was facing death, he said, "This is the end, for me the beginning of life."  While his physical life was taken from him, he knew that his faith in Jesus Christ would bring life after physical death and that life is for eternity.

I do not want to be the bearer of bad news to you but the fact is that you are going to die.  But, there is life after death and the way to experience that is by giving your heart to Jesus Christ.  You will experience the joy of the true meaning of live while you continue life's journey.  But, this is just a glimpse of what the afterlife will be in heaven.
